X faces an extra $1.9 million fine to lift its ban in Brazil.

X (formerly Twitter) may soon resume operations in Brazil if it agrees to pay an extra fine. Reports from Reuters and others note that Brazil's Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes has stated the platform, owned by Elon Musk, can return to the country after paying a fine of 10 million reais ($1.9 million). This is in addition to the 18.3 million reais ($3.4 million) X has already been fined. The Brazilian government froze accounts tied to X and Musk's company Starlink to cover the initial fine, but Moraes says Starlink must drop its appeal against the payments to proceed.

X has been in a legal battle throughout the year over Moraes’ efforts to block accounts he accused of spreading misinformation about the election. Musk has criticized Moraes, suggesting he should resign or be impeached. X eventually ceased operations in Brazil, leading to its ban in late August, which gave a boost to rival platforms like Bluesky.

Recently, however, X appeared to reverse its stance, agreeing to block the specified accounts, pay the fines, and appoint a legal representative in Brazil. The new fine stems from X allegedly bypassing the ban earlier this month when service resumed — a move the company claims was unintentional, linked to its switch to Cloudflare infrastructure. In response, X’s Global Government Affairs account acknowledged the situation, expressing respect for the sovereignty of the countries it operates in and emphasizing that Brazilian access is vital for a healthy democracy.
