Sutradhar is a media content startup that seeks to captivate smartphone users with short videos of Indian mythological stories available on its app, catering to various languages. The Ramayan series, which aired on Doordarshan during the COVID-19 lockdown, became the highest-rated show, topping the TRP charts. Other epics like Mahabharata and Shri Krishna also saw significant viewership during the same period, highlighting the demand for Indian epics in vernacular media. Recognizing this interest, a Gurugram-based startup, Sutradhar, is aiming to narrate these mythological tales through brief video formats. Launched in 2020 by Satish Meena and Gaurav Tiwari, the startup is on a mission to bring the joy of storytelling to smartphone users in an engaging way. They believe that despite the various technology shifts—whether radio, print, cinema, or television—mythological stories haven't been adequately adapted for the smartphone medium. "Each time a new technology emerges, these stories are repackaged to fit that format. However, we feel that not enough has been done to adapt them for smartphones," says Satish.
