In this weekend's Power On Newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman shared new insights into Apple's upcoming smart home products. The company plans to launch two versions of a HomePod with a display, with one expected as early as next year. The first model, known as J490, will be a lower-end smart display, while the second model, J595, will feature a larger display and a robotic arm, targeting a higher price point. Both devices are anticipated to incorporate Apple Intelligence and will operate on a new system referred to as homeOS. However, Gurman suggests that homeOS may simply be a rebranding, as it will likely be based on tvOS, with expectations for the two systems to eventually merge. The details about the lower-end product have been previously reported by 9to5Mac, highlighting its use of an A18 chip for Apple Intelligence, a square display, a FaceTime camera, and hand gesture recognition. The higher-end smart display with the robotic arm is expected to be priced over $1,000. These new smart displays aim to introduce Apple Intelligence into the home, a feature not currently available on any of Apple's existing smart home devices, including the $299 HomePod. Gurman notes that the hardware engineering team for these devices is collaborating closely with Apple's AI teams.Additionally, the lower-end smart display will support applications like Calendar, Notes, and Home, with an interface designed to enhance control over home applications and provide quick access to information. The home screen will likely prioritize widgets over traditional apps.
