Updated: Jun 22, 2024

The European Union-India Trade and Technology Council (TTC) Working Group 2 hosted a start-up matchmaking event, featuring twelve high-impact solution providers specializing in electric vehicle battery recycling technologies. These start-ups were shortlisted by an independent committee of experts from both the EU and India, based on criteria such as scientific merit, market readiness, and cooperation potential. This initiative supports the EU and India’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and strengthening economic ties.

The event provided a platform for start-ups/SMEs to present their innovative technologies, covering the entire battery recycling value chain from collection to valuable mineral extraction. Indian start-ups included Lohum, LW3 Pvt Ltd., BatX Energies, Evergreen Lithium Recycling Pvt Ltd., Metastable Materials Pvt Ltd., and CENALL Waste Management LLP. The European start-ups included Alterity, Ecomet Refining, Eneris, Primobius, RockTech, and Tozero.

Opening remarks were given by H.E. Saurabh Kumar, Ambassador of India to Belgium, Luxembourg, and the EU, and H.E. Herve Delphin, Ambassador of the EU Delegation to India. Professor Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, and Marc Lemaitre, Director-General for Research and Innovation at the European Commission, also spoke at the event.

As a next step, three start-ups from the EU and three from India will be selected to participate in a week-long market immersion experience in each other’s regions. During these visits, the selected companies will engage with stakeholders, explore potential collaborations, and gain insights into the local market landscape. This initiative aims to foster pilot projects, commercial opportunities, and co-development initiatives.

Professor Ajay Kumar Sood highlighted the event's role in bringing together leading talents and technologies in battery recycling, offering opportunities for exchange, networking, and investment. He emphasized the benefits of the exchange trips for enhancing insights into the EV landscape and ecosystems in both regions. Marc Lemaitre stressed the importance of an innovation-led EU-India partnership, noting that advancements in battery recycling are crucial for environmental sustainability. He lauded the matchmaking event for connecting innovative start-ups from both regions to scale up green solutions under the EU-India Trade and Technology Council.
