-

During the ET Make in India SME Regional Summit in Kolkata, West Bengal's Minister for Heavy Industries and MSMEs, Shashi Panja, highlighted the state's significant role in India's MSME sector. She stated that West Bengal accommodates 89 lakh MSME units, contributing 14% to the national total and employing 1.36 crore people. The minister emphasized the state government's support for entrepreneurs, especially in sectors like handloom and textiles, which have been pivotal in transforming the MSME ecosystem.

Panja credited the success of the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal's recent elections to the government's initiatives in the MSME sector. She also noted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's efforts in establishing industrial corridors and empowering women through MSMEs. West Bengal boasts the highest proportion of women-run MSMEs (23.4%) compared to other states, with initiatives supporting 2,000 tribal women engaged in production using local materials.

The summit featured discussions on the future prospects of MSMEs, with established entrepreneurs sharing their journeys to inspire newcomers, particularly youth. Sectoral experts highlighted areas needing attention, such as food and agriculture-based products. Technology's role in MSMEs was underscored, with speakers advocating for its integration to enhance efficiency and competitiveness.

For instance, Mehul Mohanka of Tega Industries Ltd praised Bengal's strategic location and highlighted government initiatives like free school uniforms benefiting the textile sector. Ajay Joseph from Adobe stressed the importance of embracing technology, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), as an opportunity rather than a threat.

Sagar Daryani, co-founder of Wow Momo, shared his entrepreneurial journey, starting with limited resources and now expanding nationwide. Panelists also discussed challenges like the availability of raw materials, such as cow leather, due to regulatory changes in slaughter practices across states.

Overall, the summit showcased West Bengal's evolving MSME landscape and its potential to drive economic growth through innovation, sectoral diversification, and technology adoption.
