The current job market is undeniably challenging, especially for freshers, even those graduating from prestigious colleges across the country, who are encountering difficulties in securing employment. Consequently, individuals are increasingly willing to work longer hours for lower compensation, solely to secure a job. Rajesh Sawhney, the founder and CEO of GSF Accelerator, recently recounted an instance he encountered, shedding light on the harsh realities faced by interns.
During a startup meeting at Le Meridien Hotel in Gurugram, Sawhney encountered a young intern who approached him seeking assistance. Engaging in conversation, Sawhney learned that the intern, a graduate from a local catering college in Dehradoon, had been interning for the past three months. Shockingly, Sawhney discovered that the intern was receiving a meager monthly stipend of Rs 2,000.
Expressing his dismay, Sawhney criticized the hotel for offering such paltry compensation, asserting that it was impossible for the intern to sustain himself in Gurugram with such a meager amount. He condemned the practice, describing it as exploitative, particularly towards young interns who are striving to establish themselves in their careers.
Sawhney's post garnered widespread attention, with many echoing his sentiments. Some pointed out the prevalence of unpaid internships in industries like retail, while others lamented the disparity between the workload and compensation in certain sectors.
Commenting on the intern's situation, individuals expressed sympathy, highlighting the challenges faced by those entering the workforce, particularly in industries where compensation does not commensurate with the level of effort expended.
