SonicWall has acquired Banyan Security, a vendor specializing in secure service edge (SSE), to enhance its secure access service edge (SASE) offerings on the cloud security platform. This move aims to incorporate additional zero trust security components into SonicWall's stack. The acquisition is particularly beneficial for small businesses seeking to replace outdated architectures with SSE solutions, emphasizing zero trust network access (ZTNA). SonicWall's CEO, Bob Vankirk, highlighted the industry's shift towards more comprehensive approaches involving SSE and ZTNA due to the increasing prominence of cloud computing and SASE. The collaboration with Banyan Security is expected to provide cloud-based SASE solutions, enabling partners to deliver a versatile security architecture throughout their customers' evolving cloud journey. The zero-trust framework, emphasizing "never trust, always verify," is crucial for securing organizational edges in hybrid work environments, moving away from the traditional perimeter-based security model. SonicWall had previously partnered with Perimeter 81 in 2020 for a ZTNA offering called Cloud Edge Secure Access, but the acquisition of Perimeter 81 by Check Point Software Technologies prompted SonicWall to seek a more controlled solution for its portfolio.
