AI video generators need filmmakers to embrace their models in the production process to justify their existence. To help jump-start the AI-driven film industry, Runway has allocated $5 million, plus additional service credits, to support up to 100 original films. This initiative, known as the Hundred Film Fund, is designed to back projects that incorporate the company's generative video model. Runway acknowledges that traditional funding often overlooks fresh, innovative ideas, so they’re offering grants for various types of films, including features, shorts, documentaries, experimental pieces, and music videos.
The company has also hinted that the fund could grow to $10 million. When asked how $5 million will be divided among 100 projects, especially when grants up to $1 million are mentioned, Runway's Head of Creative, Jamie Umpherson, responded that funding would be tailored to each project's specific production needs. Additionally, five “director residency” positions are available, though the details are unclear.
Runway won’t claim ownership or control over the projects, only asking for biweekly updates and the right to showcase the finished work. A panel of advisors, including Tribeca co-founder Jane Rosenthal and musician will.i.am, will help select award recipients and may offer further guidance.
