Investors in the startup ecosystem are placing significant emphasis on unit economics, total addressable market (TAM), and founder quality amidst a challenging downturn. This consensus emerged during a discussion at the Global Business Summit, moderated by Sanjeev Bikhchandani, where leaders and investors outlined their key priorities.

Kunal Bahl of Titan Capital stressed the importance of positive unit economics and a strong team with a track record of success. He highlighted the significance of targeting narrow TAMs where domination is feasible with limited capital. Bahl emphasized the need for discipline in unit economics, stating that improvement with scale is often elusive.

Namita Thapar from Emcure Pharmaceuticals, also a Shark Tank India investor-judge, prioritized large TAMs, founders with sales experience, product-market fit, and the ability to capitalize on the market. Sudhakar Adapa of Bia Brands noted the shift towards fundamental metrics like profitability.

Aman Gupta of Boat emphasized the value of investing in founders with hustle and humility, citing personal experiences. He highlighted the importance of taking risks on startups, especially when traditional investors are hesitant.

The discussion reflected on the significant funding decline in the Indian startup ecosystem in 2023, with ongoing stress expected in 2024. Mukesh Bansal highlighted the importance of building outstanding products and partnering with great co-founders.

Founders stressed the paramount importance of execution, with Aadit Palicha of Zepto emphasizing its primacy for consumer-oriented businesses. Palicha suggested focusing on return on equity to enhance revenue and bottom line simultaneously.

Namita Thapar also highlighted the growing importance of impact investing, noting the potential for companies to balance social impact and profitability, predicting its increasing prominence in the future.
