iPhone users have the option to remain on iOS 17 and still receive security updates.

Apple has confirmed that iOS 18 will be released to the public on September 16, bringing several new features. However, some users may prefer to delay installing it to avoid potential bugs or app compatibility issues. To accommodate this, Apple will allow users to remain on iOS 17 and still receive security updates.

On Monday, Apple released the iOS 18.0 Release Candidate (RC) to the public, as well as iOS 17.7 RC for developers and public beta testers. While iOS 17.7 doesn’t introduce new features, it includes important security patches and bug fixes. It’s likely that both iOS 17.7 and iOS 18.0 will be released at the same time next week, allowing users to choose between staying on iOS 17 with the latest updates or upgrading to iOS 18 with new features.

This approach isn’t new; Apple did something similar last year by continuing to release security patches for iOS 16 after iOS 17 was launched. However, once devices that couldn’t upgrade to iOS 17 became the only ones needing support, Apple stopped providing iOS 16 updates. Since iOS 18 will work with all iPhones compatible with iOS 17, Apple is likely to discontinue iOS 17 updates in the coming months.

Giving users the option to stay on their current iOS version is useful for those who rely on apps that may not yet be fully optimized for iOS 18. Alongside iOS 18, Apple is also set to release iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, tvOS 18, visionOS 2, and macOS Sequoia next week.
