Aravind Srinivas, the CEO of Perplexity AI, shared an interesting incident on the Big Technology Podcast, revealing that Google once offered a 300% salary increase to an employee planning to leave for Perplexity AI. Srinivas, an IIT-Madras alum, highlighted the extent to which major tech companies go to retain their staff. The recipient of the substantial salary hike was part of Google's 'search team' and was not directly involved with the AI division.

Moreover, Srinivas discussed the tech industry's layoffs, noting that companies often target high-salary individuals who may not contribute proportionately to productivity. In an internal memo addressed to all Google employees, CEO Sundar Pichai acknowledged the company's ambitious goals and emphasized the need to make tough choices to create capacity for strategic investments. Pichai stated, "We are committed to investing in our major priorities this year, and the reality is that tough decisions are necessary to achieve these goals."
