Both Spain and India have rapidly growing startup ecosystems characterized by high levels of innovation, entrepreneurship, and talent. The South Summit can significantly impact India’s startup ecosystem by offering a platform for startups to showcase their innovations and network with potential collaborators. Maria Benjumea, president of South Summit, hinted at a possible future collaboration with India during the 13th edition of the event in Madrid. Here are excerpts from her interview:
How has South Summit evolved since its inception, and how has it impacted the global startup ecosystem? Since its launch in 2012, during Spain’s economic crisis, South Summit has grown significantly. It was initially created to promote the potential of innovation and entrepreneurship. Over the years, it has become a crucial part of Spain’s startup ecosystem, helping the country emerge as a significant hub for innovation and investment. Spain’s transformation has been substantial; previously, there were few startups in Europe, and Spain, particularly Madrid, was relatively unknown. Now, Spain has gained recognition, leading to remarkable growth. The Summit has impacted the global startup ecosystem by highlighting Spanish startups and attracting both domestic and international investments.
Given your experience with South Summit, what key differences do you see between the Spanish and Indian startup ecosystems? The Spanish and Indian startup ecosystems differ due to their unique economic, cultural, and technological environments. Spain’s ecosystem is smaller and less mature than India’s but has been growing steadily, especially in Madrid. The Spanish government has been supportive of startups through various initiatives. India, on the other hand, has an impressive startup scene, and there is potential for future collaboration.
Does the South Summit plan to expand globally? South Summit aims to expand its global presence, with upcoming events in South Korea, marking its first venture into Asia. By connecting different startup ecosystems and cultures, the event seeks to promote cross-border collaboration and create new business opportunities for entrepreneurs worldwide.
What are the emerging trends and innovations in the startup world? South Summit observes that innovation spans all sectors and industries, with technologies like Artificial Intelligence being particularly prominent in recent years. There is an emphasis on human-centric innovation, advocating for the development of technologies that prioritize societal impact and sustainability. While the world today is better than ever, it is essential to ensure that human beings remain at the center of progress. The Summit promotes sustainability and collaboration within the ecosystem through initiatives to reduce the event’s environmental footprint and encourage partnerships between startups, corporations, and other stakeholders to tackle global challenges like climate change.
How does South Summit encourage students to embrace startup culture? South Summit works with universities to foster a spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship among students. By incorporating innovation into university education, the Summit aims to prepare students for the evolving job market. It partners primarily with IE University in Madrid but also collaborates with other academic institutions to provide students with opportunities to engage in the startup ecosystem.
