As the seventh phase of the Lok Sabha elections concluded on Saturday, exit polls suggest that the ruling BJP, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is likely to secure a third consecutive term. If this happens, the industry anticipates that the BJP's continued leadership will bolster India’s sustainability initiatives through new policies and frameworks.
Mahesh Girdhar, Managing Director and CEO of EverEnviro Resource Management Private Ltd, an environmental solutions company working with governments and private firms, expects the new government to focus on clean energy sectors. He predicts India will experience significant economic growth from 2024 to 2028 and believes that maintaining this momentum will require advancing reforms in key areas, particularly renewable energy. This includes investing in innovation and technology, and fostering public-private partnerships to create a cleaner and more sustainable India.
Girdhar also anticipates a focus on developing robust pipeline infrastructure, simplifying tax structures, and creating a framework for a grid system similar to solar, to facilitate compressed biogas (CBG) production and distribution. He advocates for the promotion of Fermented Organic Manure (FOM) to enhance soil health and support regenerative agriculture. Additionally, he expects efforts to increase CBG induction in the renewable fuel landscape, aiming to position India as a renewable energy hub and economic power.
Industry leaders also expect the new government to address high capital and operational costs in the renewables sector by providing access to affordable financing and establishing risk-sharing mechanisms.
Shivdutt Das, Executive Director of Vishwa Samudra Group, emphasizes the need for a continued commitment to infrastructure development, which has been a priority over the past decade. He expects the government to further invest in this area and introduce innovative schemes to encourage private sector participation.
During his second term, Prime Minister Modi made significant strides towards sustainability, including efforts to reduce national carbon emissions and a commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070. The BJP’s manifesto highlights a continued focus on environmental sustainability, pledging to increase the share of non-fossil fuel sources in line with the Panchamrit initiative and continue progress towards a ‘Sustainable Bharat’.
