Artificial intelligence (AI) has deeply impacted our lives, from customizing our online experiences to helping us navigate and monitor our health. Recently, there’s been growing optimism that AI could assist in addressing global environmental challenges like climate change. AI, which enables computers to mimic human thinking, can solve complex issues and manage vast datasets. However, the technology also comes with significant environmental costs. Here, we explore the advantages and disadvantages of AI in environmental contexts.

### Four Ways AI Can Benefit the Environment

1. Energy Efficiency: AI can optimize energy usage by managing and controlling energy systems. For instance, AI-driven "smart grids" can monitor and adjust electricity generation to match consumer demand, reducing energy costs and enhancing efficiency. Google's use of AI to cut energy needed for cooling its data centers by 40% is a prime example.


2. Urban Infrastructure: AI can enhance waste management by improving recycling rates, as seen with Recycleye in the UK, which uses AI to sort materials more effectively, reducing landfill waste. AI-powered technologies can also improve public transport systems in "smart cities," reducing traffic congestion and vehicle emissions. Additionally, AI can help improve air quality by analyzing pollution data and forecasting air quality.


3. Sustainable Agriculture: In agriculture, AI-driven machines, robots, and sensors monitor weather, soil conditions, and crop needs in real-time, optimizing water use and reducing pesticide application. As climate change progresses, AI can help farmers mitigate the impact on crop yields and enhance resilience.


4. Environmental Monitoring: AI can predict natural disasters like floods and wildfires with greater accuracy and speed, helping to reduce their impact. It can also monitor environmental changes, such as measuring iceberg changes far more rapidly than humans can. Organizations like The Nature Conservancy are using AI to minimize the environmental effects of hydropower in regions like the Amazon.


### The Downsides of AI

Despite its potential, AI has several significant drawbacks:


- Energy Consumption: AI requires substantial energy, especially during the "training" phase where large datasets are processed. Advanced AI models like ChatGPT consume far more energy than conventional systems. The International Energy Agency predicts that by 2026, energy use from data centers, AI, and cryptocurrency could more than double from 2022 levels, highlighting the urgent need for more energy-efficient AI systems.


- Water Usage: AI systems have considerable water requirements, primarily for cooling data centers. AI also indirectly increases water consumption through the energy it uses, especially when that energy comes from coal-fired power plants or hydroelectric sources.


- Broader Environmental Impacts: The environmental footprint of AI extends beyond energy and water use. For instance, AI has been employed to boost oil extraction and drive consumer demand through targeted advertising, both of which contribute to higher carbon emissions and resource depletion.


In summary, while AI holds significant promise in addressing environmental challenges, its associated environmental costs, particularly in terms of energy and water usage, need urgent attention. Solutions to mitigate these impacts are crucial as AI continues to advance.
