India's space sector marked a significant milestone with the successful launch of the Agnibaan Sub-Orbital Technology Demonstrator (SOrTeD) rocket on May 30, 2024. Developed by Chennai-based startup Agnikul Cosmos, this mission signifies a major step in India's private space endeavors. The Agnibaan SOrTeD is a single-stage launch vehicle powered by the company's 3D-printed semi-cryogenic Agnilet engine, making it the world's first single-piece 3D-printed rocket engine.
The rocket, standing 6.2 meters tall, was launched from India's first private launchpad, ALP-01, located near ISRO's facilities in Sriharikota. The mission lasted just over two minutes, reaching an altitude of 20 kilometers before splashing down in the Bay of Bengal. This brief but crucial flight gathered essential data to fine-tune the development of the Agnibaan launch vehicle, which aims to cater to the small satellite launch market (Wikipedia) (India Today) (India Today).
Agnikul Cosmos has ambitious plans following this successful launch. They intend to conduct an orbital flight within the next year and are developing India's first reusable launch vehicle. Additionally, the company aims to carry payloads in the developmental stages and seek further funding to support these initiatives. Co-founder and COO Moin SPM has expressed a vision similar to SpaceX, aiming to make space launches as routine as car or bike journeys (India Today) (India Today).
