Foxconn is considering the assembly of Apple’s flagship iPad in India, marking a major expansion beyond its current focus on manufacturing iPhones. Currently, Foxconn India, along with other international contract manufacturers, only assembles Apple smartphones.
According to a report by ET, Foxconn is looking to assemble iPads at its Sriperumbudur facility in Tamil Nadu. This move is part of Foxconn’s broader strategy to diversify its operations in India, which includes potential plans to produce AI servers.
Discussions with the government have reportedly been positive, and Foxconn is expected to significantly increase its operations in the coming years, adding iPads and potentially other products to its production lineup. However, the assembly of Apple Mac laptops may take longer due to lower production volumes.
This expansion is occurring alongside substantial investments by Foxconn in Karnataka, with an additional INR 13,911 Cr ($1.67 Bn) planned. The shift in production away from China, driven by COVID-19 disruptions and geopolitical tensions, has led Apple to increase its manufacturing presence in India, particularly in the southern regions of the country.
