Ioannis Antonoglou, a prominent figure in Google DeepMind and a key developer for the Gemini language model, has left the company to establish his own AI startup in London. This move follows the departure of three other lead developers from Gemini since September. Additionally, Laurent Sifre and Karl Tuyls, along with three other Google DeepMind employees, have left to create an AI startup in Paris. Despite these exits, Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai views this as a positive trend, citing the success of former Google employees who have gone on to create thriving startups. Google DeepMind, a leading AI research lab, faces competition not only from established companies like OpenAI, Amazon, and Meta but also from startups founded by ex-Google personnel. According to reports, Antonoglou's departure is part of this trend, as he embarks on establishing his own AI-focused startup in London. The Information reported that Antonoglou, a seasoned AI researcher, left Google DeepMind, where he served as a senior staff research scientist, to pursue entrepreneurial endeavors. The report indicates that Gemini, the large language model developed by Google to rival OpenAI, experienced a series of departures, reducing its lead members from 36 before the exits.
